[ssba-buttons]Stainless Steel Yuan Series F2 Pygmy 9 – 440hz
The “Pygmy” scale is one of the most popular Hand pan scales made in recent years. It is a pentatonic (5 note) variation. This scale is mystical, hypnotizing, and yearns to be played more and more. It is popular for a reason. It is simply captivating!
There does not seem to be a direct correlation between the handpan variation and traditional Pygmy music. This is partially due to a difference of tuning temperament in modern music. The name “Pygmy” was likely first associated with handpans by Panart when they built a few different variations named “Pygmy” during the creation of the first Generation Hang 2002 – 2005. Perhaps traditional Pygmy music was a significant inspiration as they brought those scale forms into a western tuning temperament based on 440hz, hence the tip of the hat in the naming.
The F2 note on this instrument is tuned in a special way compared to other handpan notes. The fundamental F2 is joined by a compound 5th on the long axis and the 2nd octave on the short axis creating a 1:3:4 harmonic ratio vs the classic 1:2:3 harmonic ratio of the octave and compound 5th of most handpan notes. This alternative harmonic ratio integrates the low bass note of the F2 with the 4th octave notes of C4 and F4 creating a broader unity to the overall harmonic landscape.
This scale plays flawlessly with instruments in F Minor, C Minor, F Dorian, G and C Phrygian, G Phrygian Dominant, C Dorian, Ab Major.
Our newest Yuan Series includes some of our most popular scales and a few others that we have wanted to build for awhile. It is the alchemical synthesis of a new architectual layout and finish combined with our time test experience and skill.
