Stainless Steel Professional Series D Minor – Kurd 14
Mysterious and meditative, the Kurd scale is among the most popular Hand Pan Scales ever made as it is basically a full minor scale. It was first popularized on Handpans by Victor Levinson, who builds the SPB. As one of the earliest builders, he crafted mostly D Kurd instruments for numerous years and first used the name “Kurd” to refer to his instruments in D Minor. The scale variation was greatly welcomed at a time when D Minor instruments were very common due to Panart production of the “Integral” Hang®, which was a hexatonic variation of D Minor. Numerous early viral videos by Hang Massive, Daniel Waples, and David Swarup also helped the popularity of D Minor Handpans.
The name “Kurd” comes from Arabic music and is short for Kurd Maqam, where “Maqam” is synonymous with “scale”.
The scale has been further popularized by Sam Maher, in his viral video of a C# Kurd, which has been also referred to as “Annaziska”.
As a full diatonic minor, it is also sometimes referred to as Aeolian mode in western music theory. This “natural minor” offers everything a minor scale can offer. It can be mysterious and meditative, but also dark and full of tension or bright, positive and uplifting depending on which chords are played. This leads to great diversity and many possibilities to explore. It also plays flawlessly with F major and G Dorian.

I bought this instrument about a month ago. It has honestly changed my life. I didn’t realize a musical instrument could be so easy to play and sound so beautifully enchanting. I started playing at my local farmer’s market and people are captivated by it. It seriously stops people in their tracks. The best is when the young kids come over and dance. I am older and wanted to treat myself with something upon retirement. I couldn’t be happier! I have played many instruments over the years and know the difference in a beginner vs a professional instrument. The investment was well worth it. The notes are pristine and Saraz’s service was exceptional. I had a few questions before purchasing and Mark was great in answering each one. They didn’t have it in stock when I ordered, however they had it ready to ship within 8 weeks and even made a video of my instrument for me before it shipped. I wasn’t sure I would be satisfied by only one scale, however, so much can be done with it and there are so many nuances to the instrument. The tuned shoulder tone is sweet and even the hole in the bottom is tuned. It is clearly a professional instrument! I am already considering another one in C# so I can play them together chromatically. Awesome instrument, awesome company, definitely recommend!

I’ve played a few handpans before and felt it was time to invest in a top tier instrument that I could grow into. The dynamic range on my Saraz is amazing. It handles delicate, soft tapping just as beautifully as faster, energetic rhythms. Even with a light touch, the notes sing beautifully. I love how balanced the sound is across all the fields. The bass notes are deep and grounding, while the higher notes are sweet and crystal clear. It is a masterpiece of sonic engineering. Truly an exceptional instrument. With shipping time, it took about 9 weeks to arrive at my doorstep. Great customer service and a wonderful instrument. I really couldn’t be happier.
